Important Things To Learn About Your Hypothyroidism Treatment

By David Rickstein

Hypothyroidism treatment is not the same for all people. It depends on why your thyroid gland is not providing you with enough hormones. When the thyroid is under active you may feel very tired most of the time. You also may have weight problems and your hair could be getting thinner.

The main form of treatment for under active thyroid is a synthetic thyroid hormone, but this is not used in all cases. This kind of medication can be very effective for many kinds of thyroid conditions. Yet, there is no way for the average person to know how their thyroid gland is working unless they have testing. You will need to see your doctor for this kind of procedure.

Once you see your doctor you will be examined and you can discuss your situation. If the doctor deems it necessary you may have blood tests to look for several kinds of health conditions. Once the results are available you and the doctor can discuss treatment options.

In some cases, an infection may affect thyroid function. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics for a week to ten days. At the end of the antibiotic regimen your thyroid gland may return to normal function. There may be nothing else you need to do. However, your doctor may want to monitor the thyroid with periodic testing.

If your thyroid has been removed you will need to take medication for the rest of your days. Some types of thyroid disorders are autoimmune in nature (Hashimoto's thyroiditis), and this means that your body's immune system sees the thyroid as an invader and attacks it. Lifelong medication is usually required for this condition. However, this is not always the case with autoimmune disorders and your thyroid function may improve. This is why you need frequent monitoring.

If you start taking thyroid medication it may take a while for it to work. Your doctor will perform another test after a week or so. This helps the medical professional determine the proper strength of medication. Some people may only need a small dose while others require much larger doses.

If you suspect you may have an under active thyroid you can try some lifestyle changes before seeing a doctor. Try changing to a healthier eating plan and include more vegetables and fruits. Form a regular exercise routine, and it can be as simple as walking for thirty minutes three times a week, or join a local gym. Try to avoid stressful situations and practice relaxation technique, as stress can have a major effect on the thyroid gland. If you try thyroid supplements discuss them with a doctor or pharmacist, before taking.

Everyone feels tired and run down at times, but if it persists you may have a thyroid problem. Try eliminating things like refined sugar and improve your eating habits. Incorporate more exercise into your life. If this does little good you should make an appointment with your doctor. You can discuss your problems at length and you may need some testing. It is possible that you may have to take medication as a hypothyroidism treatment, but you will feel much better.
