Tips For Efficient Cycling Training On A Stationary Bike

By Shane McConnell

Many people avoid getting gym memberships because the commute can be annoying and the overall cost is not worth it. However, working out on your own can make it a bit difficult to get motivated, especially when weather and traffic factor into outdoor exercises. Stationary bikes are ideal for anyone who has these concerns, but when cycling training on a bike in the home, there are a few things everyone should know.

Firstly, the actual location of the stationary trainer is a major consideration. The room it is in should be spacious enough -- small rooms tend to warm up very quickly as an exerciser begins to sweat. If it gets too hot, it could affect the efficiency of the workout. In addition, the machine should be away from any walls to achieve maximum allowed range of movement and to ensure a comfortable workout session.

As with any type of workout, keeping form will ensure the maximum results. Always make sure that the seat is level and parallel to the ground. The height of the seat should allow for a comfortable amount of room from the pedals. Your hips should not be rocking back and forth during the workout. When in riding position, the rider should be leaned over just a bit, which means adjusting handlebar height.

To make sure that you do not stop the workout from boredom rather than exhaustion, try using any form of entertainment. This will prevent the rider from wanting to look at the time, which can make it seem as though the workout is taking longer. Listen to a playlist with catchy songs or have the clock on the bike covered by a magazine. It may also help to watch 30-minute television shows to keep track of time while also being entertained.

It is a good idea to keep track of your workout stats so that you can truly understand what progress has been made. Ensuring that the same workout is not done each time will mean that results will come more quickly. Speed, distance, time, and calories burned are all factors that will help a person understand the extent of their exercise. Speed and resistance should be altered in intervals for the best results.

Cycling training is a great workout that many people use to get into shape. Using a stationary bike is perfect for this because a rider will never be deterred by weather, unfamiliar or unsafe territory, or fear of leaving kids at home. However, knowing where in the house to place the bike, having proper form, using entertainment, and tracking progress are a few great ways to ensure you are getting the most bang for your buck with the workout.
